Honda and Toyota are to of the world leaders in hybrid technology. Honda indroduced the first hybrid into the US market back in 1999. The 2000 Insight was a small 3 cylinder engine combined with there IMA(Integrated Motor Assist) and got close to 70 mpg. As far as sales of hybrids go, nobody can touch the Toyota Prius right now. It has been the best selling hybrid since it hit the market in 2000 with its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology.

 

 

Sales

The 2009 sales are as follows:

Honda Insight: Just under 21,000 units (Was released in March of 2009)

Toyota Prius: Just under 140,000 units

 

4WD Option

There are no hybrid vehicles that that are available with 4WD.

 

Engine Options and Fuel Efficiency

Insight:

4 Cylinder 1.3L producing 98hp , 40/43 city/highway

 

Prius:

4 Cylinder 1.8L producing 134hp, 51/48 city/highway

Transmission Options

For those that like to drive a car manually, you are out of luck when it comes to these two vehicles. They do not offer the option.

HI:

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

TP:

Electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT)

 

Body Styles:

Both of the vehicles have that aerodynamic, tear dropped shape that tends to flatten off in the rear. It may not look great, but it is the best shape of wind resistance and drag.

 

Safety Rating:

HI: 4 star rating on everything except for 5 star on front driver and front side crash

TP: 4 star rating on everything except for 5 on the front side

 

Fuel Tank:

HI: 10.6

TP: 11.1

 

Brakes:

HI: Disc in the front. Drum in the rear

TP: Disc on the front and rear.

Both have anti-lock brakes.

 

Safety:

Both have front, side, and side curtain airbags and active head restraints for the front and rear seat as standard feature on all trim levels. Vehicle stability with traction control is also standard on both vehicles.

Both vehicles have a factory warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles  bumper to bumper and 5 years or 60,000 miles on the power-train. They also offer a 8 year/ 100,000 warranty on hybrid related parts, like the battery.
