The Rav 4 and the CRV are the two small SUV or crossover options available from Toyota and Honda. The CRV as been produced since the 1996 model year and was the first SUV engineered by Honda alone. The Rav-4 was the very first compact SUV introduced to the European and Japanese markets in 1994. That same model was then introduced to the American market in 1996. The CRV and Rav4 originally shared the Civic and Corolla platforms, respectively.

 

Hybrid Option

Although consumers seem to want a hybrid of this size, neither the CRV or the Rav4 are offered with hybrid technology as of 2010.

 

Sales

The 2009 sales are as follows:

Honda CRV: Just over 191,000 units

Toyota Rav4: Just over 149,000 units

 

4WD Option

Both the CRV and the Rav4 come in a 2WD option and a 4WD option.

CRV:

4 Cylinder 2.4L producing 180hp , 21/27 city/highway (4WD) 22/28 (2WD)

 

Rav4:

4 Cylinder 2.5L producing 179hp, 21/27 city/highway(4WD) 22/28 (2WD)

V-6  3.5L producing 246hp, 19/27 city/highway

Transmission Options

For those that like to drive a car manually, you are out of luck when it comes to these two vehicles. They no longer offer the option.

HC:

5 Speed Auto

TR:

4 Speed Auto and 5 Speed Auto

 

Body Styles:

Both are 4 door vehicles. HC has a hatchback as of 2007. The Rav4 has a rear door that opens to the side in a traditional manner.

 

Safety Rating:

HC:

5 Star across the board except for a 4 star rollover.

TC:

5 Star crash test rating across the board except of 4 star on the front passenger and rollover.

 

Fuel Tank:

HC: 15.3

TR: 15.9

 

Brakes:

Both vehicles have front and rear anti-lock disc brakes.

 

Safety:

Both have front, side, and side curtain airbags and active head restraints for the front and rear seat as standard feature on all trim levels. Vehicle stability is also standard on both vehicles.

Both vehicles have a factory warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles  bumper to bumper and 5 years or 60,000 miles on the power-train.
